Behaviour

These days many people realise that, despite our busy life styles, the meeting of our animal companions needs involves more than providing shelter, warmth and food. Good veterinary care along with a balanced diet and exercise is the norm. However despite our best efforts problems can arise which can cause the responsible owner concern and spoil our relationship with our animals. It may be the fact that you are experiencing such problems that has led you to this site.

It is important to realise that while your dog is unique it is very unlikely that the problem behaviour is. I will work with you to find a solution that is not only manageable but is individually tailored to fit in with your family, home and lifestyle.

For example some people might define an aggressive dog as one which bites, where as others may feel that barking or growling constitutes aggression. However, if you feel your animals' behaviour is a problem then it needs to be resolved and I can help you with this. Many owners worry that they have caused their dogs behaviour, it is true that owners can inadvertently reinforce bad behaviour, but owners should not blame themselves. It is the responsible owner who seeks help to remedy the problems.

What to expect!!!!

I am sure you have seen one of the many TV programs featuring various trainers and behaviourists and will have preconceived ideas on what to expect. Well, despite what some of my clients think, I do not use magic or witchcraft! Your dog tells me everything but I don’t profess to be a dog listener or whisperer or any other fancy title. What I am is someone with twenty years experience of working with dogs day in and day out. I have studied dog behaviour and psychology and my learning is an ongoing process. I can read your dog’s body language, and your dog will recognise this and respond to me accordingly.

It is important to realise that while your dog is unique it is very unlikely that the problem behaviour is. I will work with you to find a solution that is not only manageable but is individually tailored to fit in with your family, home and lifestyle. I completely understand that a problem dog can put a huge strain on family relationships; it is therefore advisable that all members of the family attend the consultation.

The consultation usually takes place in our dog and people friendly office and will usually last between one and a half to two hours, depending on the complexity of the problem. During the consultation the problems you are experiencing with your pet are discussed in detail. This will enable me to fully understand the problem and provide you with the correct advice in order to help you and your pet.

We also have the use of an 8 foot fenced field so we can work outdoors in complete safety. I may use one of my fully trained dogs to work with your dog. A written report will follow the consultation detailing the problem and rehabilitation programme.  Success will depend on how much work you are prepared to put in and follow the advice given. It is therefore very important that you fully understand the advice and that you are sure it can be implemented within your home.
